Teacher Process

The Geometry Unit 3 SLT 1-16 online learning unit includes six tasks. The  first 5 tasks is designed to be done in 5 days (one per day). It covers composite area of  2D figure and composite surface area and volume of 3D shape. Through the process of the first 5 days' activities included daily cooperative leaning as main frame work, students should be able to evaluate, examine, and critique each others' reasoning based on their trust and responsibility. It'll take 18 days for students to complete their greenhouse design project (task 6). By  finishing the project successfully, students should gain skills not only on the content learning, but also increase their communication, technology using and critical thinking skills.

The teacher acts as a lesson facilitator to carefully design the lesson unit in a student centered and project based online learning environment. The teacher monitors each group's progress through their online daily collaborations, electronically turned in worksheets and self-practice reports, daily reflections, and final presentations and reflections. Providing timely feedbacks through Emails or discussion forums (Google Classroom or Padlet) builds up a learning community with caring and sharing

The differentiated lesson strategies (i.e. students have choice to complete their tasks in different levels) and paces give all students an equal learning opportunity. The scaffolding step-by-step directions including the listed learning objective to each task and Evaluation Rubrics sets a clear expectation to hold all students accountable.

Standards:

Standards Integrated into the Lesson Unit

  • G-GMD.3: Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve problems.

  • G-GMD.4: Identify the shapes of two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects and identify three-dimensional objects generated by rotations of two-dimensional objects.

  • G-MG.3: Apply geometric methods to solve design problems (e.g., designing an object or srtucture to satisfy physical constrains or minimize cost).

Common Core State Standards

  • CCSS.Math.Practice.MP3 – Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

  • CCSS.Math.Practice.MP1 – Make sense of problems and preserve in solving them.

  • CCSS.Math.Practice.MP5 –Use appropriate tool strategically

  • CCSS.Math.Practice.MP6 –Attend to precision

  • CCSS.Math.Practice.MP8 –Look for and make use of structure.
